The Infection Control Specialist directs the infection prevention/control program, including design and implementation of surveillance for nosocomial events, proactive implementation of infection prevention strategies, analysis of surveillance results, provision of education, development of policies and procedures, and design/implementation of new programs as necessary.
Responsibilities Develops, implements, and maintains a surveillance plan based on the population(s) served, services provided, and previous surveillance data. Develops and implements proactive strategies and best practice to prevent infections. Conducts surveillance and outbreak / performance improvement investigations by using epidemiologic principles. Conducts surveillance in a consistent and timely manner. Maintains and communicates accurate surveillance data that is consistent with the CDC's National Healthcare Safety Network infection definitions. Prepares a monthly/quarterly infection control report for the Infection Control Committee, which presents surveillance data and trends and epidemiologically significant findings.
Requirements Education: Registered nurse in healthcare related field with at least three years clinical nursing experience in the hospital setting and at least 3 years of Infection Prevention/Control required.-OR-Licensed or certified healthcare professional (e.g. Clinical microbiologist with a BS or MT degree and at least three (3) years' experience in clinical microbiology in a hospital setting, or Registered Respiratory Therapist with at least three (3) years' experience in a clinical hospital setting) and at least three (3) years of Infection Control/Prevention in a hospital setting required. Licensure / Certification: Certification in Infection Control (CIC) within two years of employment required. Experience: Has knowledge and experience or a willingness to learn about areas of patient care practices, microbiology, asepsis, disinfection/sterilization, adult education, infectious diseases, communication, program administration and epidemiology. Effective Communication Skills; readily accepts change and can influence people and organizational climate. Strong analytical and investigative skills. Knowledge of federal, state and local regulations and legislation that impact the Infection Control field; familiarity with national and local Infection Control networks and resources.
