Job Summary

Residential Life at the University of Massachusetts Amherst has adopted Residential Curriculum as its model for student learning and community development. As a member of the Residential Life staff, the Assistant Director for Residence Education is responsible for leading the overall student experience within a residential area. The Assistant Director serves as a member of the Residence Education Leadership Team and provides leadership for priority initiatives in Residential Life. Position reports to the Director of Residence Education.

Essential Functions

Student Residential Experience: The Assistant Director provides overall direction and leadership for and assessment of the comprehensive residential experience in a residential area (housing between 1500 and 3500 students) including residential curriculum/student learning, living-learning communities, student leadership initiatives, diversity and inclusion initiatives, student support, crisis/incident response and community standards. Leads a functional area of campus focused on a particular student population; first-year students, first year and sophomore students, returning (multi-year) students, or all class-years within the Commonwealth Honors College. Communities supervised may include Residential First Year Experience communities, SophoMORE Communities, Thatcher Language Community, Defined Residential Communities, Transfer Student Community and the Commonwealth Honors College Residential Community; collaborate effectively with campus partners and Faculty-in-Residence. Actively support the Residence Hall Association (RHA) and their initiatives, including advising a student organization or committee as assigned.

Supervision and Staff Leadership: Assistant Directors provide leadership and supervision for Residence Education full-time, graduate and undergraduate staff within their area of responsibility, including 4 - 7 Residence Directors, 1- 6 Graduate Assistants, up to 106 undergraduate Resident Assistants, and student administrative support staff. In addition, the Assistant Directors for Residential First Year Experience areas supervise one Coordinator for Student Success, up to 4 Learning Communities Graduate Assistants and up to 35 undergraduate Peer Mentors; the Assistant Director for the Commonwealth Honors College Residential Community supervises one Learning Communities Graduate Assistant, up to 15 Peer Mentors, summer housing staff, and student office staff. Supervises committees and summer staff in areas of responsibility as assigned. Attains expert knowledge of applicable collective bargaining unit agreements (CBA) for applicable collective bargaining units (CBU). Assistant Directors collaborate with Residential Life Human Resources staff to coordinate or chair assigned search, selection and training processes in Residence Education.

Organization Leadership: Serves as a member of the Residence Education Leadership team to provide overall direction and leadership for programs, initiatives and staff. Represents Residence Education at Residential Life, Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, and University meetings, committees and programs and participates in planning and implementing university initiatives. Possesses a broad understanding of Residential Life and its units to be able to effectively represent the department to faculty, staff, students, parents and other constituents. Consults with student leaders on policy and program development decisions. Support and plan initiatives that contribute to University, Student Affairs and Campus Life and Residential Life strategic plans.

Community Standards and Incident Response: In collaboration with the Dean of Students Office and the Assistant Director of Residence Education for Community Standards, upholds the Code of Student Conduct and Residential Life Community Standards; implements the Student Conduct system for the residential area assuring appropriate due process for students. Adjudicates higher-level student conduct cases. Supervises and trains staff to ensure compliance with student conduct policies and standards. Assures appropriate response to, follow-up for and documentation of student concerns, crisis situations, and bias incidents and assures compliance with federal, state and university laws and policies. Collaborates with campus colleagues, including University Police, Dean of Students, Center for Counseling and Psychological Health, Environmental Health and Safety, Center for Woman and Community, and other units proving support services for students. Provides on-call coverage and response for campus residential community of over 13,000 students.

General: Serves on related University, Student Affairs and Campus Life, and Residential Life committees. Supports and participates in university initiatives such as New Students Orientation, student organization events, and others related to the overall student experience. Participates in Residential Life processes including searches, move-in, training, and events. In areas of responsibility, collaborates with campus partners, creates and implements assessment and planning initiatives, and creates/contributes to reports and presentations. Engages effectively with student leaders related to position responsibilities. Engages in professional development activities related to Residence Education and position responsibilities. Participates in required training programs related to position. Remains current in related best practices and relevant trends. Position is identified as a Title IX Responsible Employee and a Clery Campus Security Authority. May serve in the absence of the Director of Residence Education.

Other Functions

  • Performs related duties as assigned or required to meet Department, Executive Area/Division, and University goals and objectives.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Master?s degree in Higher Education, Administration, or related field.
  • Four (4) academic years' directly related full-time experience working in a residential setting in Higher Education.
  • Demonstrated experience providing leadership for full-time staff. Experience supervising live-in graduate and/or undergraduate residential life staff including selection, training, and evaluation.
  • Contemporary understanding of student learning, student development, and community engagement in a residential setting, including ability to analyze assessment data related to student learning. Experience and/or familiarity with residential curricular models.
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations and developing inclusive communities and work teams.
  • Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of incident response, compliance, and on-call structures.
  • Experience managing department or unit level projects. Ability to manage multiple concurrent responsibilities and priorities.
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Previous work experience with honors students or honors environment.
  • Previous work experience in medium to large residential life program (min. 5,000 beds) at a public institution.
  • Massachusetts Class D Driver?s License required upon hire.

Work Schedule

  • Typical work schedule M-F 8:30am-5:00pm.
  • Required to work some nights.
  • Required to work some weekends.
