Job Summary

The Director of Career Planning and Student Development is responsible for the implementation of the comprehensive career program for the College of Engineering. The Director manages the overall operations of the Career Center; implements effective career related programs for undergraduate and graduate students; maintains employer and alumni relationships to create expanded job, internship, and graduate school opportunities; and works with faculty and staff to effectively communicate opportunities to students. The focus of this position is to develop a wide range of experiential learning opportunities for engineering students and to develop and maintain strong relationships with corporate partners. One of the College s strategic priorities is to enable every undergraduate student to participate in an experiential learning opportunity prior to graduation. The Director serves as the educational expert in this area and represents the College to on and off campus constituencies. The Director also prepares proposals and works closely with Development to acquire resources in support of experiential learning initiatives.

Essential Functions

Implements the College of Engineering Career and Student Development Center s plan:

  • Identifies and cultivates potential sources of support (alumni, foundations, NSF, etc.) in conjunction with the College s development staff and deans in order to build the capacity of the Engineering Career Center and related student professional development opportunities in the College.
  • Collaborates and communicates with department heads, chief undergraduate advisors, program directors and faculty on career-related issues.
  • Develops policies and guidelines for fair and ethical recruiting as set forth by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).
  • Establishes metrics to assess program effectiveness; Collects and analyzes data and utilizes results to identify program strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Contributes to the academic programs of the colleges through innovative engineering career related seminars and workshops.

Designs and implements career related programs for students:

  • Implements career development plan for students from first-year through senior year.
  • Trains and oversees staff on the full range of career-related activities including one-on-one career counseling, skills workshops and recruiting events.
  • Provides opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students to connect with industrial members through career-related events.

Develops and maintains employer and alumni relationships:

  • Oversees the management of existing industrial relationships and identifies and attracts new employers.
  • Identifies and builds partnerships with other units on campus and within the Five College community to leverage industrial relations.
  • Designs and implements plan to increase employer participation on campus and aid in recruitment strategies.
  • Works closely with the College Development Office to cultivate alumni and corporate relationships.
  • Provides opportunities for employers and alumni to connect with students.

Communications/marketing

  • Develops and implements online career development tools to provide additional career resources for students.
  • Manages the operation of online resources to effectively communicate career-related opportunities to students.
  • Increases visibility of College of Engineering student talent through targeted marketing materials.
  • Initiates and maintains relationships with professional engineering organizations to promote their interest in recruiting UMass engineering students.
  • Works with targeted engineering populations such as the Diversity Programs Office and the Joint Student Engineering Societies to effectively communicate career opportunities.

Manage Career Center

  • Serves as the primary source of recruiting and career information for the College of Engineering.
  • Supervises the day-to-day activities of the Career Center including hiring, training and supervising of professional and student staff.
  • Identifies and secures additional resources for the Career Center.

Other Functions

Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensur

  • Bachelor s degree (education, engineering, human resources, counseling or related field preferred).
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressive administrative experience in higher education career development.
  • Demonstrated experience in program leadership and staff management.
  • Demonstrated success in developing innovative career services.
  • Ability to use quantitative, analytical methods to assess program.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with students, faculty, and industrial partners.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Master s degree in education, engineering, human resources, or counseling.
  • Industrial experience and knowledge of the engineering field.
  • Experience with the use of social media and online tools as an effective communication and learning strategy.
  • Experience with the use of Filemaker Pro, InDesign and Survey Monkey.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

Typical office environment.

Work Schedule

  • M-F, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm.
  • Some travel, evenings and weekend work.
