The Director of Multi-Modal Education leads the college efforts in the strategic development and implementation of Master s degrees, hybrid and online courses for the fourteen departments and schools within the College of Natural Sciences. Working under the direct supervision of the Associate Dean, Operations & Graduate and Postdoctoral Programs, the Director collaborates with deans, chairs/heads, program leaders/coordinators, faculty, the Office of Online Education, University Without Walls and the Graduate School to lead efforts to identify opportunities and to assess, prioritize, develop and implement new learning courses and degree programs throughout the range of educational modes offered by the University for both the Amherst and Mount Ida campuses.
Examples of duties:
- Serve as a leadership resource in the identification, prioritization, design and development of new learning experiences; including working with partners in identifying the interests and needs of students, recruiting students to these opportunities, supporting the design and implementation of curricula to address those needs, and partnering with subject-matter experts and instructors to produce best-in-class content and interactive exercises that support student success.
- Function as the primary liaison for the college with the University s multi-modal enterprise, managing all operational aspects of the programs, such as research, marketing, recruitment, standards, and support for the college s Master s degrees, hybrid and online programs.
- Organize the appropriate resources to support the programs, including but not limited to, the identification of opportunities for expansion, the coordination of instructor identification and recruitment, the establishment of course practices/standards, and the development and reporting of metrics of such programs.
- Lead the instructional design services and operations (research, planning, direction, coordination and assessment) of Master s degrees, online and hybrid courses and programs. Establish logistical, instructional, and pedagogical policies for the creation and delivery of online courses in collaboration with deans, chairs/heads, program leaders/coordinators and faculty across the college.
- Oversee all instructional design projects in support of online learning, which includes developing and monitoring project plans and schedules; managing the workflow of the development process by coordinating the input from various community/team members; and facilitating project team meetings.
- In collaboration with staff from the University s Online Education Team and Information Technology manage the College s learning management systems (LMS) and associated learning technologies.
- Cultivate best practices in instructional design and integrate new technologies to support better learning outcomes for students.
- Lead efforts in the design and use of templates for course shells in LMS for online and hybrid programs that have a common instructional design (ID) and single brand identity consistent with Quality Matters standards and ID best practices.
- Review all new online and hybrid courses, in collaboration with the College Curriculum Committee, to ensure that they meet and are consistent with University and College standards.
- Oversee compliance with interregional guidelines for online learning.
- Create and implement in person and online training (including ongoing workshops) for faculty in the pedagogy, technology, and design of online learning that is consistent with best practices in ID and emerging technologies.
- Conduct course audits and provide feedback to faculty; prepare periodic reports documenting data on metrics of programs.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)Master s degree, preferably in Instructional Design and/or Technology, Instructional Systems, Educational Systems, Educational Technology, or a related field.At least five years of extensive experience with building blended and online course content within learning management systems (e.g. Canvas, Blackboard, Desire2Learn, Moodle, etc.)Administrative experience managing online/hybrid program development and training programs.Experience teaching in an online environment, including assessment of student outcomes.Demonstrated ability to create educational content with tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Google Apps, Snagit, Captivate, Camtasia, Softchalk, Articulate Storyline, and Tegrity lecture capture.Familiarity with models and strategies of instructional design with demonstrated experience in curriculum development, emphasizing competency-based instruction.Understanding of trends in higher education, such as distance learning, adaptive learning, competency-based education, use of open education resources (OER), etc.; understanding of higher education and regulatory issues and how these impact online learning.Experience creating ADA compliant content relevant to a culturally diverse audience with different values, beliefs and attitudes.A consistent record of successful project management, including the ability to meet project quality expectations and schedule commitments.Strong innovative and collaborative skills in effectively working with internal and external constituencies and organizations.Commitment to a culture of diversity, respect and inclusion.Ability to work independently to organize multiple tasks and set priorities for action, take initiative, be creative, and operate with self-direction in a fast-paced office environment.Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact effectively and work productively in establishing and maintaining harmonious working relationships with a diverse population of staff and students.Ability to organize and prioritize goals; ability to collaborate well to formulate plans and objectives in accordance with overall college goals; ability to identify and implement process improvements.Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and to set and meet deadlines while maintaining high standards of accuracy and quality.
