Commonwealth Honors College offers a variety of educational, social, and advising opportunities to support more than 3,300 academically talented undergraduate students. The honors college is a campus-wide program; students from all majors in every academic college are eligible to join the honors college. The Dean?s Office is located in the CHC Building, which is surrounded by the six residence halls of the Commonwealth Honors College Residential Community (CHCRC). CHCRC is home to about 1,500 honors students, and is located on the west side of the UMass Amherst campus, near the main library and the Recreation Center.

Job Summary

The Executive Director is responsible to the Dean of Commonwealth Honors College (CHC) and works closely with the Dean in the implementation of the administration of academic programs, course enrollment management, instructional budgets, and support of the Commonwealth Honors College Council. Supervises staff related to academic support of the honors college, and participates in the overall management of the College by providing leadership for administrative operations, including finance and budget, human resources, information technology services, facilities management, and special projects.

Essential Functions

Academic Programs:

  • Work closely with colleges, departments and faculty to ensure an honors curriculum that meets the needs of honors students from all majors.
  • Manage CHC course enrollments by analyzing enrollment activity and developing course scheduling options that address student needs; develop communications plan for outreach to students and coordinate with Advising unit to ensure full enrollment. Supervise Honors College Scheduling Officer.
  • Oversee and manage staff support for Commonwealth Honors College Council, established by the Faculty Senate; work with chair of the council?s Course & Program Committee; advise council chair and Dean regarding council business and priorities; prepare council?s annual report to the Faculty Senate. Work with University IT and General Education Council Chair on modifications to the Campus Curriculum Management System and reporting to address the needs of the two councils.
  • Scholarships and Fellowships:

  • Develop strategies regarding effective scholarship programs for advancement of undergraduate research. Supervise administration of research fellowships and grants program.
  • Administration and Management:

  • Provide leadership to ensure collaboration and cooperation among unit directors and various administrative units of the college; serve as senior administrative liaison with central administration and other colleges and schools.
  • Serve on Dean?s Executive Committee with the Dean, Associate Deans, and Development Director.
  • Partner with unit directors in areas of employee relations, staffing, organizational development and efficiency, and performance management.
  • Provide advisory support to unit directors, supervisors and staff.
  • Streamline business processes to maximize efficiency and effectiveness within the college.
  • Provide leadership for facilities planning and college-initiated construction projects.
  • Identify immediate and long-range human resource needs and develop plans to fulfill these needs in partnership with unit directors based on CHC strategic direction and goals.
  • Advise on long-range planning of new programs/strategies as these impact college operations and staffing.
  • Attend meetings on behalf of the Dean, including considerable contact with senior level Department of Higher Education, statewide Commonwealth Honors Programs, system-wide UMass, and Amherst campus administrators, faculty committees, departmental heads and chairs, etc.
  • Computer Information Systems:

  • Supervise IT director and oversee IT group.
  • Identify intermediate and long-range organizational needs best served through IT solutions.
  • Advocate for IT infrastructure, staffing and budget needs.
  • Other Functions

    Perform other duties as needed.

    Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Graduate degree in the liberal arts or a related discipline.
  • Five years of experience in a management position, with at least three years in higher education.
  • Demonstrated experience in program and curriculum administration, administrative management, human resources, budget planning and facilities planning.
  • Demonstrated experience in the management of computer information systems and networks and IT staff.
  • Experience in course management, including enrollment, scheduling, and analysis of course needs.
  • Experience in constructing and managing instructional budgets.
  • Excellent managerial, negotiation, and project management skills.
  • Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

    Experience with UMass systems and departments.
