JOB DESCRIPTIONDirector of Curriculum and Instruction for English Language Arts (ELA) and History/Social Science (HSS) REPORTS TO: Superintendent of Schools SUMMARY:The Lawrence Public Schools strategic plan calls for empowering schools with the support necessary to succeed. It relies on ensuring that all schools offer an engaging, rigorous, and aligned curriculum that addresses the needs of every learner. The Director of Curriculum and Instruction for ELA and HSS will be responsible for the effectiveness of student learning and assessments of teaching and learning. This includes collaborating with teachers and administrators to evaluate, plan, develop, edit, create, align, and monitor curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development. The Curriculum Director reports to the Assistant Superintendent and supports building administrators to establish clear goals and outcomes. DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS POSITION INLCUDE: Supervising and coordinating ongoing curriculum alignment work of teachers throughout the district, preK-12 Development and implementation of common formative assessments; assisting administrators and their staff in analyzing and improving instructional practices and achievement Coordination of curricular activities throughout the district Coordination of professional development for staff according to established needs and at the direction of the Superintendent Providing expertise and advice on matters pertaining to curriculum, professional development, and assessment aligned to strategic planning efforts and accountability Assist the Superintendent in the development, interpretation and implementation of school district policies, procedures, and strategic initiatives as requested to support the district s vision of excellent learning opportunities for all students. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Position requires a minimum of a Masters of Education degree; 2. Certification as Principal, Director/Supervisor or Assistant Superintendent/ Superintendent; or documentation of recent application3. At least five (5) years experience teaching in a public-school setting; 4. Successful leadership experience in PreK-12 standards-based ELA and HSS curriculum development and/or demonstrated success in instructional coaching; 5. In-depth knowledge of Titles I, II-A, II-D, personalized learning, Response to Instruction and Intervention, Massachusetts Educational Reform Act and other related educational regulations;6. Demonstrated skills that address the Professional Standards for Administrators as outlined by the Massachusetts Department of Education;7. Knowledge of Massachusetts ELA and HSS Curriculum Frameworks, National Common Core Standards, and the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) including familiarity with Certificates of Occupational Proficiency;8. Working knowledge of school district s curriculum, professional development, and Strategic Plan related to ELA and HSS. 9. Demonstrated ability to plan, implement and evaluate professional development; 10. Ability to think deeply and propose data-driven solutions to complex organizational challenges;11. Excellent organizational skills including the ability to pay considerable attention to detail, adhere to deadlines, and track and maintain multiple projects; 12. Excellent verbal and written communication skills;13. Skilled in establishing and maintaining positive collaborative relationships, particularly with principals, teachers, and the Assistant Superintendent/Superintendent, and the ability to maintain objectivity and fairness in dealing with people;14. Ability to collaborate, and incorporate diverse opinions in order to meet the needs of the teachers and students of the Lawrence Public Schools. PREFERRED: Advanced degree in Curriculum Development or Educational Leadership OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Minimal physical effort is required to perform the duties under typical office conditions Travel to/from schools and attendance at regional/state/national conferences is required. Citizenship, residency, or work VISA in United States requiredPERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Assists principals in supporting all aspects of ELA and HSS instruction, including learning objectives, instructional strategies, and assessment techniques Ensures curriculum alignment, preK-12, through a coordinated, collaborative process Suggests, implements and evaluates instructional programs for students with diverse needs in order to improve outcomes of the teaching/learning process Monitors regular assessment of student learning by working with principals, faculty, and other administrators to plan and implement learning outcomes; evaluate assessment processes for learning outcomes and program effectiveness; Review and analyze assessment results, and coordinate action planning as a result of these processes. Works with appropriate staff to develop, maintain and revise curriculum documents Makes recommendations for changes to instructional techniques, materials, or pedagogy Provides leadership and guidance in reviewing curriculum to ensure it is free from bias Conducts, and/or recommends, Professional Development within allocated resource lines Works with the Grants Department to appropriately utilize relevant sources of funding Seeks out and shares opportunities to obtain grant funding for identified needs around curriculum, instruction, assessment or professional development Articulates the district s mission, instructional philosophy, and curriculum implementation strategies to the community and solicits their support in realizing the mission Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
